Ahmed Iqbal, 29, Manchester (United Kingdom), PokerStars qualifier – 1,087,000 chips
This English player, natural from Manchester, began playing online poker 5 years ago. Only one year later, Ahmed became a professional poker player. Gone are the days when he used to work in a call center. Ahmed prefers playing online, as he can play more hands and opts for the NLHE cash games. This is the first time he is playing in an Estrellas tournament and, appart from playing poker, he is able to relax by the sea.
Alejandro Piñeiro, 44, San Juan, PokerStars qualifier – 965,000 chips
Alejandro began playing poker in Alicante back in 2006. This tattooist is married and has three children. His wife is with him here in Alicante. Alejandro began playing live poker in Alicante after an American cousin told him about poker. This is the third Estrellas tournament of the Stars in which it participates.
Álvaro Santamaría, 21, Palencia, PokerStars player - 824,000 chips
This young IT student, natural from Palencia, started playing poker 2 years ago through a friend and now is a part time poker player. Álvaro prefers playing online becasue it is easier to earn money. Amongst the different poker styles, he prefers NLHE cash games. Álvaro is already a well known face on the Estrellas circuit and he will continue attending this kind of live tournaments.
Eduardo de las Rivas, 33, Santander – 500,000 chips
Originally from Santander, in North Spain, this player started playing online poker 3 years ago thanks to some friends. This is the third Estrellas tournament he plays. Eduardo is a fireman and, as long as his profession allows it, he plays online poker, to the point where his hobby has almost become a profession. Eduardo tells us that the tournament has an excellent buy-in and structure.
Rafael Planelles, 33, Alicante – 479,000 chips
Rafael Planelles started playing online poker through a friend and now is a part time professional player. Planelles prefers playing online since he is able to play more hands. He loves playing tournaments and his favourite game is Hold'em. When he is away from the poker table, he enjoys playing backgammon. This is the first time for him participating in an Estrellas tournament.
Martin Clemmensen, 28, Helsingør (Denmark), PokerStars player – 489,000 chips
Martin started playing online poker with his friends in 2002, and since 2006 he is a professional poker player. Clemmensen likes playing live tournaments because it allows him to travel around the world and he divides his time between cash games and tournaments. His speciality is NLH. In his spare time Martin likes to play squash, scuba diving and going to the gym. On top of that he also writes his own blog.
Do not let his age trick you, because Martin Clemmensen is a veteran at the poker table and has cashed in various live events. In the previous Estrellas Málaga he finished 31st for €2,532 in the €1,000 NLH Main Event. Earlier this year he finished 28th in the EPT Copenhagen 35,000 DKR Main Event cashing $13,768. Clemmensen has also cashed on the other side of the Atlantic. In January this year he came 6th in the NLHE $90 tournament at the PCA, good for $1,700. Back in 2008 he played the LAPT San José Main Event finishing 18th for $9,770. And during the same year he came 82nd in the $1,500 NLHE at the WSOP, cashing $5,344.
In his spare time, Martin likes playing squash, scuba diving and going to the gym. He also writes his own blog.
Markus Wetzel, 23, Aachen (Germany), PokerStars qualifier - 323,000 chips
This Computational Engineering student from Aachen started playing online poker 3 years ago. As well as the rest of his Estrellas final table colleagues, Markus prefers online games, as he can play more hands. As long as his studies allow it, Markus always plays online and amongst his favorite games is NLH. This young german divides his time between cash games and tournaments. This is the first Estrellas tournament he plays and will be repeating the experience.
Andrej Nagy, 28, Gibraltar – 259,000 chips
Andrej is originally from Slovakia but has lived in Gibraltar for some years. Nagy began playing poker five years ago and since 2007 he is a professional poker player. Before dedicating his whole time to poker, Adrej used to study at University and he has an MBA. Andrej prefers playing online poker because he can play more hands. His favourite game is NLHE. Despite his youth, he has cashed in in several tournaments. In October 2009 he finished 88th at the NLHE £5,000 EPT London Main Event good for $13,532 and two months later, in December, he finished 47th at the EPT Prague where he obtained €10,300 for his efforts.
